Richmond Walk to Easby Abbey (accessible route)

(This post is from a visit in August 2022. Some activities mentioned will have changed but they are still offering similar)

This afternoon we have been to The Station in Richmond after a friend invited us along. This is a lovely restored victorian building (the old railway station of Richmond). A lovely place to meet up with friends or spend some time with family.

Parking is available at The Station. Parking costs apply -up to 2 hours-£2, up to 4 hours-£4. Free after 4pm. (Up to date costs as of February 2024).

There’s a cafe, cinema, art gallery and gift shop as well as outdoor grassy areas for kids to play or to relax and enjoy the sun, theres also Archers Ice Cream Parlour Richmond based here too!

There was an activity trail on for the kids for a £1 which we did and they both got a little prize, this is running until 5th September. We then had icecream from Archers Icecream who have a parlour at the station (a popular local family business). We sat outside on one of the picnic tables. The icecream was yummy, lots of flavours to choose from 😋

There’s also a swimming pool at the leisure centre right next door too. It has a training pool and main pool. I've not personally been here to comment.

The main highlight for us with the nice weather was that there was a walk from the station all the way to Easby Abbey. We found out about this when handing in the trail for the kids. It follows the old railway track and is wheelchair and pushchair accessible but a stoney rather than smooth path.

This was a lovely walk with really nice scenery, lots of trees and nature, sheep and horses to spot on the way, a bridge to cross and a river for paddling in too. It is around a mile to get there (took us around 30 minutes). The walk was fairly flat all the way but as advised above stoney rather than smooth, so if taking a pushchair then an off road one would be best as it wasn't the smoothest ride for my little one!

We spent around 30 minutes or so at Easby Abbey before heading back as it was getting late, otherwise we could have stayed longer.

This is somewhere you could definitely spend the day, take a picnic, enjoy the river and the walk then lots of fun exploring Easby Abbey too and the kids can play hide and seek and do some exploring.

We would definitely visit here again and take a picnic for our walk up to the Abbey.

The Station Cafe looked like a nice relaxed place with natural light coming through from the ceiling, lovely to stop for lunch too or meet up with friends if you are visiting the area. With an art gallery with local art on display in the corridors, a book library and a cinema. The Cinema has some dog friendly showings if you want to take your dog along for a nice day out 🤗

ACCESSIBILITY

Wheelchair accessible building with accessible toilets on all levels and lifts. Disabled parking bays in the car park. The walk up to Easby Abbey is on a stoney path so an electric wheekchair/mobility scooter or all terrain pushchair is advised but it's doable. The Abbey itself isn't overly accessible as lots of mounds/small hilly parts, I struggled with a pushchair. It can be done though. You can see it from the gate and the walk itself is nice also.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Darlington is the nearest station. Frequent bus services to Richmond, many of which stop at The Station. There is an Arriva bus service from the Market Place, which runs approximately every 20 minutes. (Info from The Station Website)
