Undiscovered Island Creative Play at The Hullabaloo

Updated: Nov 4, 2023

Borough Road, Darlington, DL1 1SG

*The creative play changes every few months usually with the seasons. This write up is based on the installation from when we visited in February 2023.

A few weeks ago we visited The Hullabaloo in Darlington for their Creative Play installation ‘The Undiscovered Island’. This is recommended for ages 0-10 years. We’ve been meaning to go ever since this new installation opened back in September and today we finally got round to it! 😀

We got there first thing at 10am and it wasn’t too busy even with it being school holidays, however there were many events/shows on this week at The Hullabaloo, so it could be busier at times, we might have just hit lucky. They seem to limit it to 10 at a time based off our visit and if people are waiting to go in the time will be limited too, but we still had a sufficient amount of time in here even with people waiting.

It’s a lovely set up, lots of sensory elements with different textures and colours, perfect for little ones or could even be beneficial to those with additional needs. It all felt very relaxed and it was perfect for the babies in our group.

Kamron (6) even enjoyed a few elements including the glow pen that was used on certain materials on the installation to create designs.

We also had some hot drinks in the cafe whilst the kids played in the play corner which has books, colouring in activities, baby toys and some blocks to play with.

You don't need to book for a general session, just drop in (there may be a slight wait during busier times but there is the cafe and play corner whilst waiting). It's FREE to visit and all the activities mentioned are free too, but as they are a charity they rely on donations to offer wonderful events and activities like the above. If you would like to donate to The Hullabaloo here’s the link https://www.theatrehullabaloo.org.uk/donate

They offer some neurodiverse sessions for each installation (options of quieter/dimmed lighting/sound and more reduced numbers). These sessions do need to be booked and the number of these sessions offered are limited.

For updates on future installations and how to book the neurodiverse sessions go to https://www.theatrehullabaloo.org.uk/
